We don’t need new striker this summer, says Wenger
ANGEL Di Maria is set to undergo a medical at Manchester United ahead of his £64m move from Real Madrid.
The Argentine international, who has said his farewells to his team-mates in Spain, is set to jet in to Manchester yesterday afternoon and is expected to have put pen to paper this night.
United have already agreed a British record transfer fee for the winger, with the £64m deal eclipsing the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.
According to Times journalist Oliver Kay, Di Maria will officially be a Manchester United player by tomorrow evening, as he becomes their fourth signing of the summer.
Louis van Gaal has already added Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo to his squad and the spending is not expected to stop there, despite just a week remaining of the summer transfer window.
United are thought to remain keen on Dutch defender Daley Blind, while a central midfielder is still on Van Gaal’s wish list, following his side’s poor start to the season which has seen them take just a point from their opening two matches against Swansea and Sunderland.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has hinted he won’t be moving for a new striker before next Monday’s transfer deadline.
The Gunners have been linked with signing a new frontman to assist Olivier Giroud all summer, with both Mario Balotelli and Edinson Cavani’s names being in the frame for a move to the Emirates.
But with just a week to go until the transfer window closes, and with other areas of the squad remaining a priority, Wenger has warned Arsenal fans not to expect a new forward at the club this summer.
‘We have [Yaya] Sanogo who will be an important asset, we have Giroud, we have Lukas Podolski, we have Joel Campbell who can play centre forward,’ he told the Gunners website.
‘We have Alexis [Sanchez] and [Theo] Walcott coming back. Let’s not forget that.
‘ All of our opponents look for strikers as well and nobody finds a world-class striker available who is better than the strikers you have.’
