The Portuguese was on Van Gaal's staff at Barcelona during the Dutchman's spell in the Nou Camp hot seat between 1997 and 2000.
The pair have met just once in competitive action, with Mourinho's Inter Milan outfit defeating Van Gaal's Bayern Munich in 2010 Champions League final.
He'll be hoping to repeat the feat at Old Trafford this weekend, however, his side will have their work cut out in keeping out United's fearsome attack, which features star names like Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
