The fortunes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday suffered another setback as the senator representing Oyo South senatorial district in the Senate, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, jettisoned the party for Accord Party (AP).
Lanlehin, who is believed to have a substantial following in Oyo State, left the party with the retinue of his supporters.
The lawmaker who was elected into the Senate on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), formally announced his defection yesterday through a defection letter addressed to Senate President David Mark.
Lanlehin, a lawyer and a former Special Adviser to former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, is believed to be dumping APC for AP as a result of alleged irreconcilable differences between him and the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
Prior to the 2007 general election, Lanlehin, who was a governorship aspirant on the platform of ACN, was prevailed upon to step down for Ajimobi by the national leaders of the ACN.
He was consequently compensated with a ticket to contest for senatorial election in Oyo South which he won. The senator is also believed to be heading for AP with the intention to pursue his governorship ambition
In his defection letter dated June 5, 2014, Lanlehin said he had decided to cross over to AP because ACN, on whose platform he won election into the Senate, had merged with other political parties which formed the APC last year.
He added that since he was not disposed to go with that arrangement, he had opted to move to AP.
The letter read: "I contested and got elected into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in April 2011 on the ACN platform. The said political party sometimes in 2013 merged with some other registered political parties and are now registered and known as the APC.
"In exercise of my constitutional right to freedom of association under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and pursuant to the proviso contained in Section 68 of the said constitution, l decided to transfer my membership of the defunct ACN to the AP, with all the rights and duties accruing thereto."
