National conference: Why Ndigbo Insist On “Six Zonal Structure”
Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Sunday insisted on a ‘six zonal structure’ for Nigeria as an outcome of the ongoing national constitutional conference.

The foremost Igbo socio-political body stated its position in a communique issued after an Imeobi/General Assembly Meeting in Enugu.
Ohanaeze delegates to the national conference briefed the assembly at the meeting.
The six-paragraph communique, which was signed by Professor Bem Obumselu, expressed solidarity with delegates of the South West and South South zones, as well as others who shared in the belief that the country should adopt a six zonal structure.
The communique said, “Ndigbo unanimously affirm that we stand on the six zonal structure.
“Ndigbo reaffirm our support for six zonal structure in solidarity with the South West, South South and all delegates that share our common view on the way forward for Nigeria.
“On power devolution, Ndigbo are restating that power be devolved to the zones.”
It would be recalled that the National Conference Committee on Political Restructuring and Form of Government had reportedly disapproved of regionalism while deliberating on three options of federalism that could be adopted for the country.
The options include a central government with states as federating units; a central government with zones as federating units; and a central government with three regions as federating units.
Ndigbo, in the communique, also insisted that Nigeria must remain a secular state.
“Religion: Ndigbo insist on proper application of the secularity of the Nigerian state,” the communique said, adding that citizenship rights should prevail as contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The communique added that the assembly was satisfied with the performance of the delegates at the confab.
“Ndigbo thank our delegates and congratulate our delegates on the good work they have done so far and are still doing,” the communique said.
