
The founder and chairman of Kanu Heart Foundation was operated on when he went for his yearly routine medical check-up at the hospital.
The former Nigeria captain,Complete Sports gathered has since left the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital and is now recuperating in one of the special wards at the same hospital. He is expected back in the country soon.
Pastor Onyebuchi Abia, coordinator of the Kanu Heart Foundation confirmed that the Atlanta 1996 U-23 Olympic Eagles gold medal winning captain has indeed had a minor heart surgery.
Abia said that there was nothing to be afraid of as the former Arsenal of England forward is currently recuperating in the hospital and will soon be back.
"I spoke with him in the afternoon yesterday (Sunday).It was a corrective heart surgery. He normally goes for a medical check-up at the Cleveland hospital annually and its during one of such checks he was operated on to correct a heart-related issue," Abia said.
Kanu was absent Friday during the Centenary Awards in Abuja where he was listed as one of the top 100 Nigerians to receive the Centennary Award.
"I feel great to be so honoured and it speaks volume of the transformation agenda of the present administration in showing commitment to sports", the former Inter Milan was quoted to have said by Abia from his hospital bed at Cleveland Hospital, Ohio, USA just as he promised to continue his football ambassadorial work for the benefit of the country.
