Impeachment: Enugu Deputy Governor Collapses While Testifying

The embattled deputy governor of Enugu State, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi, collapsed yesterday while testifying before the impeachment panel looking into the allegations levelled against him by the State House of Assembly.
Surprisingly, the panel insisted that it would continue its sitting despite a medical certificate that confirmed that Onyebuchi was suffering from high blood pressure.
A source told LEADERSHIP that the deputy governor who collapsed at about 11.35am was swiftly rushed out of the court hall at about 11:38am by his wife, Mrs Nneka Ada Onyebuchi, his children and some of his aides present for medical attention.
Onyebuchi who arrived the court with his lawyers started testifying before the panel at 9:30am.
Speaking outside the court room with reporters, one of a counsel to Onyebuchi, Ogochukwu Onyekwuluje, disclosed that the deputy governor was swiftly rushed to the hospital while the proceeding was adjourned till 2pm.
He further averred that the deputy governor might have slumped due to fatigue, stressing that he had been running around to tidy up his defence for the past two weeks.
He said the deputy governor became feverish after sitting down for hours, stating that he complained of dizziness and weakness before becoming unconscious.
Onyekwuluje further disclosed that they got a medical certificate from Dr BC Anisiuba, a consultant cardiologist with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku Ozalla, that confirmed that Onyebuchi was suffering from high blood pressure.
According to him, the doctor recommended that the deputy governor be allowed to rest for one week.
He, however, explained that when the panel reconvened at about 2pm, they suggested that the panel should adjourn till Monday to enable the deputy governor to rest for three days, a suggestion, which he said was accepted by counsel to the House of Assembly, Nduka Ikeyi.
A source told our correspondent that despite the suggestion by Onyebuchi’s lawyers, the tribunal adjourned till today and vowed to continue sitting.
